Our Mission
NAKANGO VISION INCORPORATED
Mission Statement
Nakango Vision exists to advance the rights of people with disability.
We are guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We hold that people with disability have the right to equal recognition before the law, to access to justice, to live independently and be included in the community, and to make their own decisions with support where they want it.
We work with people with disability, their families, carers and kin. We work in the languages they speak. We go to people rather than waiting to be approached, because the people most often denied their rights are the least likely to know they have been.
Our commitment is to the person, not the matter. We stay for as long as the problem lasts.
Our principles
Rights, not services. A person's entitlement does not depend on their ability to name it.
Supported decision-making. We support people to make their own decisions. We do not make decisions for them.
Access without precondition. We do not require a person to identify as disabled, to speak English, or to know what advocacy is.
Presence over process. We work in the community, before problems escalate, not only once they reach a court.
